Date night at home: a game night plan for two
A date night at home usually means the same sofa, the same streaming menu and forty minutes of choosing. Here is a plan that takes about the same forty minutes and ends with a story you will bring up for weeks. It needs two phones, something to drink, and one of you willing to start a room and send the link.
Minute 0: set up (two minutes)
One of you opens Couple Games, types a name and starts a room. The other opens the link on their phone and types theirs. That is the whole setup; there are no accounts. Put the phones on the table between you and keep the wine within reach.
Minute 2: warm up with Would you rather (five minutes)
Eight dilemmas, picked privately, revealed together. It is quick, it is silly, and the compatibility score at the end gives you the first thing to argue about. Play two rounds if the first one was too polite.
Minute 8: the Newlywed round (ten minutes)
Six questions each: three about yourself, three guessing what your partner will say. The reveal is the moment of the night. Judge generously, then explain yourselves.
Minute 18: the escape room (fifteen minutes)
The centrepiece. You are locked in the same room but each phone shows half the clues, so you have to describe what you see and listen to what they see. Five puzzles, a clock, and a door that opens when you get the cipher right. Sit close; this one is better shoulder to shoulder.
Minute 33: wind down with Story ping-pong (seven minutes)
A ridiculous opening line, one sentence each, ten lines. Read the finished story out loud in your best narrator voice. It stays in the room, so next date night you can read the old ones first.
Variations
- Competitive night: Wordle race, Word search, Jumble, Connect 4. The leaderboard keeps the record.
- Nostalgic night: write Memory lane questions about the last year, then Two truths and a lie about before you met.
- Quick night: Question of the day and one round of Would you rather. Ten minutes, streak kept.
- Long distance: the same plan works on a call; the escape room and Codenames were built for it.
